Day 1: Iquitos – Belén Market – Nanay River – Yanayacu Lodge
Your Amazon jungle tour in Iquitos begins with a reception at the airport, depending on your flight schedule. If you are already in the city, we will pick you up directly from your hotel to start this unique experience in the Peruvian jungle.
Belén Market
Your first Amazon immersion begins with a visit to the Belén Market, a vibrant place where you will find the essence of local life. You will walk among stalls filled with exotic fruits, medicinal herbs, fresh fish, and Amazonian spices, while learning about the daily customs of the locals. This visit will immediately connect you with the authentic spirit of the jungle and the richness of its gastronomy and traditions.
Around 8:00 a.m., you will walk through García Sáenz and Ramírez Hurtado streets, admiring organic products such as chonta, açaí, aguaje, and guaraná, fruits harvested directly from the rainforest. Then, you will enter the spice area, surrounded by the aromas of annatto, turmeric, and ginger, essential ingredients of Amazonian cuisine.
The tour continues to the famous Paquito Passage, known for its herbalists. Here, you will discover traditional medicinal plants such as cat’s claw, ayahuasca, garlic vine, and jergón sacha, used ancestrally by Amazonian communities. Later, in the fish section, you will observe species native to the Amazon River, enriching your experience.
You will also have the chance to taste typical dishes: juanes with tacacho, cecina, suris (edible larvae considered a delicacy), and grilled caiman. Nanay
On the way to the tourist pier, you will learn more about the history of Iquitos, remembering how it transformed from a small village into the most important Amazonian river port during the Rubber Boom.
Once in Bellavista Nanay, you will enjoy a short 15–20 minute tour before boarding. During this time, you will discover some local products and traditional preparations.

I was in Cusco and wanted to visit the jungle originally thinking Tambopata, overwhelmed with options. My desire was to visit the Amazon and be deep in the jungle with few people. I walked into the office and met Pedro who talked with me for over half an hour explaining different options. Ultimately, Pedro told me that Manu National Park is the place to be in the jungle with few people. Pedro helped me book a 6 day tour in Manu National Park 2 days later.
It is hard to describe how special Manu national park was. The trees, the wildlife, the river, seeing uncontacted Natives, and hearing all of the jungle sounds.
