Clay licks are natural mineral-rich clay formations consumed by macaws, parrots, other birds, and mammals to supplement their diet and neutralize toxins found in certain fruits and seeds. This behavior makes the Chuncho Clay Lick one of the top birdwatching attractions in the Amazon.
Macaw watching at Chuncho Clay Lick
During the boat ride, while the forest awakens with the first rays of sunlight, you will have the opportunity to observe different species of wildlife. It is common to encounter:
- Capybaras

Day 3: Mammal Clay Lick – Return to Puerto Maldonado
After breakfast on the final day, you will begin a hike along the trails of the Tambopata National Reserve. During the walk, you will observe giant Amazonian trees such as the kapok tree and the shihuahuaco tree.
After approximately 40 minutes of hiking, we will arrive at the Mammal Clay Lick, a natural site where different species of wildlife gather to consume mineral-rich clay. This behavior is essential to their diet, helping them neutralize toxins found in certain plants of the tropical rainforest.
Mammal watching at the Clay Lick
In this ecosystem, it is possible to encounter, although always subject to natural conditions, species such as:
- Amazon tapirs
- Collared peccaries
- Amazon deer
- Agoutis
- Howler monkeys
- Spider monkeys
This site is one of the best locations for mammal watching in Tambopata, as it attracts wildlife coming from different areas of the forest in search of essential minerals.
It is important to keep in mind that the Amazon rainforest is unpredictable, and wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed at specific times. However, the experience of walking through the primary rainforest and observing its untouched ecosystem is highly rewarding for travelers seeking close contact with Amazon wildlife.

Important Note
To make the most of your experience in the Tambopata National Reserve, we recommend arriving in Puerto Maldonado on a flight scheduled before 9:00 a.m. on the first day of the tour. This will allow you to join all the scheduled activities from the very beginning of the expedition without any inconvenience.
Likewise, for your departure day, we recommend booking your flight from Puerto Maldonado after 4:00 p.m., as the return journey from the rainforest depends on river navigation and ground transportation schedules. Visit to Manu Cultural Zone 5 day/4 night My husband and I completed the 5 day/4 night trip to the Manu Cultural Zone with Peru Jungle Trips. It was an unforgettable experience in such a beautiful corner of the world. Our guide, Juan, was amazing and extremely knowledgeable about the jungle ecosystem. He was always on the lookout for wildlife and had an eagle eye for spotting animals far away. He was also a master planner. When we experienced unexpected heavy rain one day, he seamlessly reorganized our lodging and activities so that we were able to make the most of our time on the trip. The van drivers and boat drivers were also very professional and took the utmost care in navigating the difficult winding roads and the river. The cook was excellent and all our meals were tasty and well planned. We visiting during the dry season and saw many monkeys, birds, frogs, insects and a capybara, along with all the incredible flora and fauna in the area. The drive to Manu is hard but well worth it for the experience and beauty of this incredible place.

Falling in love with Manu National Park Can we talk about how nobody told me I had to visit Manu? My family and I knew we wanted to explore the amazon rainforest but didn't know how. While out for coffee, we came across Peru Jungle Trips! From the very beginning, Wilfredo was incredibly friendly and explained the differences between Tambopata, Manu, and Iquitos in detail. We ultimately chose Manu because it offered us the option of a private family trip with a personal chef. I absolutely loved my time in the Amazon; the eco-lodge was very comfortable and the food was fantastic. Plus, our guide knew every trail like the back of his hand, and it was thrilling to spot various bird species along the way. I highly recommend it!!Publicado en Tripadvisor![]()

True immersive Amazon experience I so enjoyed the Iquitos 3 day tour into the Amazon and I would highly recommend it. From the moment we arrived at the airport to the time we were dropped back for our departing flight, we were looked after brilliantly. Jorge/George, our wonderful and highly experienced guide, taught us so much about this remarkable region and gave us a fascinating insight into this extraordinary part of the world. We saw a wide variety of wildlife including sloths, tree bats, tarantulas (not too close!), dolphins, so many different types of birds...the list goes on and on. Jose and his family own and run the Yanayacu Lodge, and gave us a very warm welcome when we arrived. It is basic lodging so if air con and crisp white sheets are your thing, perhaps this isn't for you. However, if you're after a true immersive Amazon experience for a few days with an excellent guide whilst staying with a lovely family, this is the one!
