Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Sacred Valley of the Incas – Aguas Calientes
Explore archaeological sites such as Chinchero, Moray, Maras, and Ollantaytambo before arriving at Machu Picchu
The first day of the tour package begins early with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. From there, we will take a panoramic journey of approximately 45 minutes toward Chinchero, one of the cultural jewels of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Chinchero
The first stop of the tour will be Chinchero, located just 30 kilometers from Cusco, one of the most traditional villages in Peru, recognized for its textile traditions. It is home to skilled Andean weavers who keep ancestral techniques alive. During the visit, you will have the opportunity to enter a local weaving center, where you will see how women extract wool from llamas and alpacas, dye it with natural pigments, and transform it into beautiful ponchos, scarves, and tapestries.
During the visit you will explore:
- A Chinchero textile center, where local families explain the traditional weaving process using alpaca and llama wool.
- Demonstrations of the use of natural dyes made from plants, minerals, and ancestral pigments.
- The archaeological site of Chinchero, built on the ancient palace of the Inca Pachacútec.
- Inca agricultural terraces that are still used by local communities.
- The colonial church of Chinchero, built on top of Inca structures during the Spanish colonial era.
In addition to its historical richness, Chinchero is recognized for having the most fertile soils in the Sacred Valley, making it a key place for understanding the innovative agricultural methods of the Incas. Here you can appreciate perfectly designed terraces that are still used for the cultivation of potatoes, corn, and quinoa.
Moray – Agricultural Laboratory of the Incas
The next stop will be Moray, an impressive archaeological complex located near Maras and recognized as one of the most enigmatic sites in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a unique agricultural system in the world. Each level has a different temperature, which allowed the Incas to recreate various microclimates and experiment with crops such as potatoes, corn, and quinoa.
During the guided visit you will discover:
- The famous circular terraces of Moray, built in the shape of an amphitheater.
- The different agricultural levels that generate temperature variations between each platform.
- The drainage and irrigation systems used by the Incas.
- The panoramic viewpoints with spectacular views of the Cusco Andes.
Thanks to its different microclimates, Moray was used by the Incas as an agricultural experimentation center where crops such as potatoes, corn, and quinoa were adapted. For this reason, many researchers consider it the first Inca agricultural laboratory.
During the rainy season, the terraces take on an intense green color that transforms this place into one of the most impressive landscapes in the Sacred Valley.
Maras Salt Mines – More Than 3,000 Ancestral Salt Pools
Continuing with the tour through the Sacred Valley toward Machu Picchu, we will arrive at the famous Maras Salt Mines, one of the most photographed attractions on the tourist circuit in Cusco.
During the tour you will observe:
- More than 3,000 salt pools built on the mountainside.
- The natural saltwater spring used since pre-Inca times.
- The artisanal salt extraction process carried out by local families.
- The renowned pink salt of Maras, valued in Peruvian and international gastronomy.
- Natural viewpoints ideal for taking panoramic photographs of the landscape.
The local inhabitants continue using ancestral techniques to collect salt through solar evaporation, keeping alive a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation.
Urubamba
After exploring Chinchero, Moray, and the Maras Salt Mines, we will continue the journey toward Urubamba. Here we will stop at a local restaurant to enjoy a buffet lunch, prepared with fresh ingredients grown in the area. The establishments in Urubamba are usually managed by local farming families, which guarantees an authentic, nutritious meal with traditional Peruvian flavors. This will be the perfect moment to regain energy and enjoy a unique culinary experience before continuing our journey to Ollantaytambo.
Ollantaytambo – Fortress and Living Inca Town
After lunch in Urubamba, you will continue toward Ollantaytambo, one of the most important archaeological complexes of the ancient Inca Empire and an essential stop on any organized trip to Machu Picchu. Known as the ancient administrative and military capital of the Incas, it is strategically nestled between two mountains that protect impressive archaeological remains.
Strategically located between mountains, Ollantaytambo functioned as a military, agricultural, and religious center.
During the guided tour you will explore:
- The majestic Temple of the Sun, built with enormous perfectly fitted stone blocks.
- The agricultural terraces of Ollantaytambo, used for agricultural, ceremonial, and defensive purposes.
- Bath of the Ñusta, a finely crafted stone fountain associated with purification rituals for the Inca nobility.
- Temple of Water and the religious sectors that during the time of the Tahuantinsuyo were considered sacred.
- Religious and administrative sectors that still preserve the essence of the Tahuantinsuyo.
- The original cobblestone streets and water channels of the ancient Inca town.
In addition to its historical importance, Ollantaytambo still preserves its original urban layout, making it one of the best examples of a living Inca town in Peru.
Train Journey to Aguas Calientes
At the end of the visit to Ollantaytambo, you will board the tourist train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to the wonder of the world, Machu Picchu. During the journey, you will enjoy spectacular scenery, crossing deep canyons, green valleys, and mountains crowned with snow-capped peaks, while the train winds alongside the Urubamba River.

The famous Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca, located in the Vilcanota mountain range south of Cusco, reaches an approximate altitude of 5,036 meters above sea level. This makes it one of the highest points of the entire Machu Picchu and Ausangate tour package.
4. Where is the Pacchanta community located and why is it important for the Ausangate trek?
Pacchanta is an Andean community located in the district of Ocongate, province of Quispicanchi, southeast of Cusco. It is situated at approximately 4,200 meters above sea level and is the starting point for the trek to the 7 Ausangate Lakes. In addition, it is known for its natural hot springs and impressive views of the Ausangate snow-capped mountain.
5. Does the Machu Picchu and Ausangate tour include accommodation in Cusco?
No. This tour package includes only 1 night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes and 2 nights of camping during the Ausangate trek. Accommodation in the city of Cusco before or after the tour must be booked independently by each traveler.
6. How difficult is the 7 Ausangate Lakes and Rainbow Mountain trek?
The difficulty level of the trek in the Vilcanota mountain range is moderate to challenging due to the altitude and long hikes. The route crosses mountain passes of up to 4,850 meters above sea level, and the hike to Vinicunca exceeds 5,000 meters in altitude. Good physical condition and basic experience in high-altitude hiking are recommended.
7. What clothing should I bring for the Cusco Machu Picchu, Ausangate, and Rainbow Mountain package?
For this Cusco tour package, it is recommended to bring clothing suitable for variable mountain weather:
- Waterproof and windproof jacket
- Thermal clothing for the cold nights in Ausangate
- Waterproof trekking boots
- Gloves, hat, and scarf
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- Small backpack for hikes
- Rain poncho during the wet season
Temperatures can vary from mild weather in Machu Picchu to below-freezing temperatures in Vinicunca and Ausangate.
8. Is it possible to visit Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain during this package?
Yes. During the visit to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu there is an option to reserve additional entrance to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. Both entrances have limited availability and must be booked 1 or 2 months in advance, especially during the high season in Cusco.
9. Where is the Red Valley located and how close is it to Rainbow Mountain?
The Red Valley is located very close to Vinicunca, in the Vilcanota mountain range south of Cusco. It is part of a less crowded alternative route and stands out for its mountains with intense reddish tones. It is generally visited after the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint during the last day of the trek.
10. Can altitude sickness occur during the Ausangate and Vinicunca tour?
Yes. Since much of the route takes place above 4,000 meters in altitude in Cusco, some travelers may experience symptoms of soroche or altitude sickness such as headaches, fatigue, or shortness of breath. Therefore, it is recommended to acclimatize in Cusco beforehand, stay constantly hydrated, and avoid heavy meals before hiking.
11. What wildlife can be seen during the Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain tour?
During the hikes through the Vilcanota mountain range and Vinicunca, it is common to see alpacas, llamas, vicuñas, vizcachas, huallatas, and high-Andean birds. In some areas near Arapa Pass and Red Valley it is also possible to observe eagles in flight.
12. What is the difference between Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca and Palccoyo in Cusco?
The Rainbow Mountain included in this tour is Vinicunca, located at 5,036 meters above sea level in the Vilcanota mountain range. Palccoyo, another colorful mountain in Cusco, is located at approximately 4,900 meters above sea level and offers shorter and less demanding hikes. Vinicunca stands out for its intense colors and high-mountain landscapes next to Ausangate.

Visit to Manu Cultural Zone 5 day/4 night My husband and I completed the 5 day/4 night trip to the Manu Cultural Zone with Peru Jungle Trips. It was an unforgettable experience in such a beautiful corner of the world. Our guide, Juan, was amazing and extremely knowledgeable about the jungle ecosystem. He was always on the lookout for wildlife and had an eagle eye for spotting animals far away. He was also a master planner. When we experienced unexpected heavy rain one day, he seamlessly reorganized our lodging and activities so that we were able to make the most of our time on the trip. The van drivers and boat drivers were also very professional and took the utmost care in navigating the difficult winding roads and the river. The cook was excellent and all our meals were tasty and well planned. We visiting during the dry season and saw many monkeys, birds, frogs, insects and a capybara, along with all the incredible flora and fauna in the area. The drive to Manu is hard but well worth it for the experience and beauty of this incredible place.

Falling in love with Manu National Park Can we talk about how nobody told me I had to visit Manu? My family and I knew we wanted to explore the amazon rainforest but didn't know how. While out for coffee, we came across Peru Jungle Trips! From the very beginning, Wilfredo was incredibly friendly and explained the differences between Tambopata, Manu, and Iquitos in detail. We ultimately chose Manu because it offered us the option of a private family trip with a personal chef. I absolutely loved my time in the Amazon; the eco-lodge was very comfortable and the food was fantastic. Plus, our guide knew every trail like the back of his hand, and it was thrilling to spot various bird species along the way. I highly recommend it!!Publicado en Tripadvisor![]()

Beautiful jungle, many animals, competent guide Our guide Yimmy tried very hard to spot as many animals as possible for us! And despite the poor state of many roads we never felt unsafe on the bus. The food was good and plenty.Publicado en Tripadvisor![]()

True immersive Amazon experience I so enjoyed the Iquitos 3 day tour into the Amazon and I would highly recommend it. From the moment we arrived at the airport to the time we were dropped back for our departing flight, we were looked after brilliantly. Jorge/George, our wonderful and highly experienced guide, taught us so much about this remarkable region and gave us a fascinating insight into this extraordinary part of the world. We saw a wide variety of wildlife including sloths, tree bats, tarantulas (not too close!), dolphins, so many different types of birds...the list goes on and on. Jose and his family own and run the Yanayacu Lodge, and gave us a very warm welcome when we arrived. It is basic lodging so if air con and crisp white sheets are your thing, perhaps this isn't for you. However, if you're after a true immersive Amazon experience for a few days with an excellent guide whilst staying with a lovely family, this is the one!
