We embark on a boat ride along the Tambopata River, navigating for over half an hour, during which we may catch sight of majestic creatures like jaguars or anacondas.
Subsequently, we’ll arrive at the clay lick or “Collpa Chuncho” as its locally known, we are treated to a breathtaking spectacle of colors and sounds as hundreds of macaws and parrots congregate to feast on the mineral-rich clay.
We spend over three hours marveling at the wondrous sight that the Collpa Chuncho provides, all while enjoying a delicious country breakfast.
Afterward, we return to the boat and venture into the smaller branches of the Tambopata River in search of more wildlife, such as capybaras, tapirs, wild pigs, monkeys, caimans, turtles, and cats.
The stunning scenery of the Tambopata National Reserve and its rivers provides a picturesque backdrop for our journey.
Afternoon Activities
In the afternoon, we make our way back to the city, taking the same route as before.
Upon arrival, transfer to a vehicle for a journey to Lake Yacumama, renowned for its stunning landscape and breathtaking sunset.
The lake is home to hundreds of macaws, parrots, and parakeets, and we may spot black caimans, herons, cormorants, wild ducks, swallows, and even a family of river otters.
We explore the lake by rowboat, possibly catching piranhas for a quick photo before releasing them back into the water.
As the sun begins to set, we head to the pier and board our boat once again to return to our lodge, where we can rest and relax after a fulfilling day of adventure.
Day 3: Sandoval Lake – “Matsigenka” Community
One of the best times to observe abundant wildlife is during sunrise or sunset.
We choose to leave at dawn by boat to reach Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve.
The exuberant biodiversity at Sandoval Lake is unparalleled. We walk a 3 km (1.8 miles) wooden path, constantly surprised by the rich fauna in this area.
At the end of the trail, we board a rowboat to explore the lake and witness black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, wild ducks, and more.
We return to the lodge for lunch before noon.
In the afternoon, we visit a family of natives from the “Matsigenka” culture and interact with them, learning about their customs and traditions.
We learn how to use bows and arrows, spin and weave cotton, and make ropes from plant bark. We also witness their ingenuity in making fire using only natural materials.
At sunset, we return to our lodge. As dusk falls, the jungle comes alive with a majestic nightlife.
We venture into the trails with flashlights to search for nocturnal wildlife such as porcupines, sloths, arachnids, insects, reptiles, opossums, night monkeys, owls, and more.
We return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

He did an amazing job of explaining the places we went to. He was also super chill and made great conversation. Despite accomplishing much in a short span, we never felt rushed. Furthermore sometimes when food is included in a tour, it's usually subpar, but the buffet lunch was fantastic and our group was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Cannot recommend this tour enough, especially if you find it difficult to adapt to altitude at Cusco in the first couple of days. Luis A2025-04-11Verified Reliable and secure agency An amazing experience! We got to know a lot about Peruvian culture, visited many archaeological sites and observed beautiful landscapes. The train experience was wonderful, certainly the best Carlee C2025-04-10Verified Very Friendly and Great Tour We had a great time on our jungle adventure. 3 days, 2 nights. Edu Z2025-01-07Verified I'd come back many more times From the beginning the very good service, always attentive to every detail to enjoy all the places visited ☺️ Lana D2025-01-01Verified Great! Affordable!!!! Highly recommend Pedro from Peru Jungle Trips. I only had a few days in Cusco, so I wanted to see as much as possible in my time frame. Pedro was so helpful in planning out my itinerary, and made sure that I spent New Years Eve seeing Machu Picchu and that I made it in time to Cusco for the countdown. Pedro not only gave me a very affordable rate (and that I know from comparing my quote to other travelers I met), but he was able to find last minute train tickets to and from MP for Dec 31st. He also made sure that at every destination, someone either picked me up or directed me to my next location. And of course, it didn’t go unnoticed that Pedro was constantly checking in on me to see how my activities and trip is going. Pedro genuinely wanted me to have a great holiday trip in Cusco.
