Day 1 – Cusco | Cloud Forest – Paucartambo – Pilcopata Lodge
Departure from Cusco towards the Manu National Park, visiting the Chullpas of Ninamarca and the picturesque village of Paucartambo. Day 1: Cusco – Cloud Forest – Pilcopata Lodge
Beginning of the Expedition to Manu Reserved Zone and discovery of the Manu Cloud Forest
Early in the morning, our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco to begin the exciting Expedition to Manu Reserved Zone, a journey that combines Andean culture, lush nature, and one of the greatest concentrations of biodiversity on the planet.
You will depart in a private vehicle toward the Manu National Park, crossing Andean valleys and traditional rural communities where the scenery constantly changes. Along the way, you will visit the Chullpas of Ninamarca, an ancient pre-Inca cemetery that offers a fascinating glimpse into the past of the Andean civilizations.
The trip continues to the picturesque colonial town of Paucartambo, known for its architecture, historic bridge, and local museum, which you can visit to learn more about its traditions and folklore. After enjoying a typical breakfast in the area, you will ascend for about 40 minutes to reach the Ajanaco Viewpoint (3,500 m a.s.l.), considered the official entrance gate to the Manu National Park and the starting point of the transition to the tropical rainforest of Manu. From this point, you’ll enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the mist-covered mountains and the vast Manu Cloud Forest.
From here, the descent into this humid and vibrant ecosystem begins — home to the spectacled bear, toucans, oriole birds, quetzals, and many endemic bird species, making it a perfect environment for birdwatching in Manu and wildlife photography expeditions.
Throughout the route, we will make strategic stops and take short walks to observe the wildlife of the Manu National Park, as well as its rich vegetation filled with orchids, bromeliads, and giant ferns.
In San Pedro, our cook will be waiting with a hot lunch served outdoors, surrounded by the tranquility of the tropical forest. You will then continue to the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock viewpoint, where you’ll witness the unique mating dance and display of this colorful bird — the national symbol of Peru — accompanied by the songs of macaws and other native species of the region.

Day 2: Pilcopata – Shintuya Hot Springs – Dorado Lodge
Exploration of the Alto Madre de Dios River and Manu Wildlife
After resting at Pilcopata – Bamboo Lodge, you will begin the second day of the Expedition to the Manu Reserved Zone with an Amazonian breakfast. Early in the morning, you will board the vehicle to continue the adventure for approximately 40 minutes through the tropical forest, where you’ll be able to admire the incredible biodiversity of Manu: brightly colored birds, butterflies, monkeys, and lush vegetation that reflects the richness of the rainforest within the Manu National Park.
Our next stop will be the Atalaya Port (500 m a.s.l.), located on the banks of the impressive Alto Madre de Dios River. Here, you will receive your rubber boots and life jacket — essential for river navigation. At this point, the boat driver and assistant will join us as part of our team for the entire expedition through the Peruvian Amazon.
From here, we will begin an unforgettable boat trip along the river, where you will have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of Amazonian birds such as herons, cormorants, vultures, kingfishers, and other species typical of the rainforest. You will also enjoy a spectacular landscape that combines jungle, rivers, and mountains — an ideal stretch for those who enjoy wildlife photography or a photo safari in Manu.
During the journey, we will make a special stop at the Shintuya Hot Springs, a natural spot perfect for relaxing and enjoying a bath in the middle of the rainforest, surrounded by the lush vegetation of the Peruvian Amazon.

In the afternoon, as the sun sets, we will venture into the forest for a night walk in the Amazon rainforest, one of the most exciting experiences of the journey. The third day of the Manu Reserved Zone expedition begins very early, departing from Dorado Lodge toward one of the most fascinating experiences in the Peruvian Amazon: visiting the Manu Macaw Clay Lick. Just ten minutes downstream, you’ll witness an unparalleled natural spectacle: dozens of brightly colored parrots and macaws gathering to feed on clay, an essential part of their diet. This moment is perfect for those who enjoy macaw watching and wildlife photography in the Amazon.
After this unforgettable experience, you’ll continue navigating along the Madre de Dios River, venturing deeper into the heart of the Manu National Park. Along the journey, you may spot birds, monkeys, and other wildlife—and with some luck, even see the majestic jaguar resting on the riverbanks or moving through the dense jungle vegetation.
While sailing, enjoy a delicious breakfast on board. Then we’ll make a brief stop at the Limonal checkpoint, the official entrance to the Manu Reserved Zone, where you must register before entering this highly protected conservation area.
From Limonal, you’ll continue upriver toward the very center of the Manu Reserved Zone adventure, a pristine rainforest environment where nature reveals itself in its purest form. Along the way, you’ll visit Cocha Otorongo, one of the park’s most emblematic lagoons. From its observation tower, you can enjoy privileged views and observe giant river otters, black caimans, and aquatic birds such as herons, kingfishers, and cormorants in their natural habitat.
Around 4:00 p.m., you’ll arrive at Casa Matsiguenka, a traditional lodge managed by the native Matsiguenka community. This place will allow you to connect with local culture and understand the harmonious coexistence that Amazonian peoples maintain with nature.
Throughout the day, you’ll have the opportunity to admire an incredible variety of Amazonian wildlife: toucans, eagles, macaws, vultures, capybaras, river turtles, caimans, and several monkey species. In the afternoon, you’ll take a guided walk through the primary forest, exploring trails in search of more wildlife while spotting new species of birds, mammals, and insects that inhabit this untouched jungle of Manu.

The fourth day of our Manu Reserved Zone expedition begins at dawn, when the echoes of the jungle awaken with the call of the howler monkey, one of the most distinctive sounds of the tropical rainforest of Manu National Park. After breakfast, we’ll take advantage of the early morning hours—when wildlife is most active—to begin a guided walk through the primary forest, accompanied by bird songs and the morning mist covering the giant trees.
Our route will take us to the impressive Salvador Lake (Cocha Salvador), one of the most emblematic and biodiverse places in the Manu Reserved Zone. This mirror-like body of water, surrounded by untouched vegetation, is home to the majestic giant river otters of Manu (Pteronura brasiliensis), an endangered species that lives in family groups and can be seen swimming or hunting fish on the surface.
During the lake navigation, you’ll also be able to spot black caimans, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, kingfishers, and the unique hoatzin—a prehistoric-looking bird highly sought after by those who love birdwatching in Manu. The surroundings are perfect for capturing wildlife photography in Manu National Park and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the Amazon rainforest.
After the tour, we’ll return to Casa Matsiguenka to enjoy lunch. After breakfast, we will embark on a journey along the Manu River toward the Pakitza ranger station, on a trip of approximately 3 hours upstream. During the journey, you’ll have the opportunity to spot a wide variety of wildlife, as this area has very few tourists, which increases the chances of seeing animals such as capybaras, caimans, various birds, and, with a bit of luck, the jaguar, the most iconic feline of the Peruvian Amazon.
Upon arrival at Pakitza, you will take a hike to the mammal clay lick, a spot where it’s possible to observe animals active during the day, such as monkeys and wild pigs.
We will then return to the Casa Matsiguenka, always alert for wildlife along the way. In the afternoon, we’ll have a meeting with the Matsiguenka community, where you’ll learn about their culture, traditions, and connection with the forest.
You’ll end the day with dinner and rest at the Casa Matsiguenka, enjoying our last night in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

Day 6: Casa Matsiguenka – Soga de Oro Lodge
Observation of giant otters and wildlife spotting at Cocha Otorongo
Today you will wake up very early to board the boat and begin the return journey, continuing our adventure along the Manu River. During the navigation, breakfast will be served on board while we keep observing the wildlife living along the riverbanks: birds, monkeys, caimans, and, with a bit of luck, the jaguar.
Along the way, you will once again visit Cocha Otorongo, where, just a few meters away, there is an observation tower designed to appreciate the surrounding primary forest landscape and increase the chances of spotting the family of giant otters that inhabits the lake.
During this visit, you will also have the chance to admire the canopy birds of the forest, the gigantic Ceiba trees, colorful butterflies, and various species of monkeys moving among the treetops.
After observing the wildlife, you will continue downstream along the Manu River, keeping an eye on the banks and high branches where caimans, turtles, and tropical birds usually rest.
Upon arrival at the Limonal checkpoint, you will take a short walk to a natural platform, famous for its excellent panoramic views of the Amazonian flora and fauna.
Afterward, we will continue navigating along the Alto Madre de Dios River, enjoying the scenery and the last opportunities to spot wildlife. Around 5:00 p.m., we’ll arrive at the Soga de Oro Lodge, where you will spend your last night surrounded by the unique and enveloping sounds of the Amazon rainforest.
For those who wish to extend the experience, we will offer an optional night walk, perfect for discovering the secret life of the forest under the light of flashlights.

There, we will say goodbye to the boat driver and crew member who accompanied us during this unforgettable adventure through the Manu National Park. At the port, our private minivan will be waiting for us to start the return trip to the city of Cusco.
During the road trip, you will still have chances to spot birds and animals along the way, as we bid farewell to the majestic Peruvian Amazon rainforest. Upon arriving at Ajanaco, you will enjoy lunch and the last views of the cloud forest, symbolically marking the farewell to the jungle.
Afterward, you will continue the journey through the Andean valleys, arriving in the city of Cusco at around 6:00 p.m., where we will drop you off at your hotel.

I was in Cusco and wanted to visit the jungle originally thinking Tambopata, overwhelmed with options. My desire was to visit the Amazon and be deep in the jungle with few people.
