Trip to the Reserved Zone of Manu and Blanquillo: tour in the Peruvian Amazon
The 6-day tour to the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park and Blanquillo is an experience designed for nature lovers who seek to delve into one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet. From the very first day, the journey allows sightings of tropical birds, orchids, the cock-of-the-rock, and, with luck, the elusive spectacled bear while crossing the cloud forests of Manu.
For six days, you will explore rivers like the Madre de Dios and Manu, lagoons such as Cocha Salvador and Cocha Camungo, the Blanquillo macaw clay lick, and observation towers that allow you to see wildlife from the tree canopy. Along the way, there are unique opportunities to see monkeys, caimans, giant otters, and, if luck is on your side, a jaguar crossing the riverbank.
The itinerary also includes walks through primary forest, baths in hot springs, cultural visits to native communities, and lodging in eco-lodges. Everything is guided by expert local guides who know the region well.
An authentic adventure through the Peruvian jungle, ideal for those seeking wildlife photography, birdwatching, and total disconnection in the heart of the Amazon.
Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Cloud Forest – Bambu Lodge
The first day begins very early, with pick-up around 5:30 a.m. in a comfortable private vehicle. From Cusco, the journey heads toward Manu National Park, with a first stop after 1.5 hours at the pre-Inca funerary towers of Ninamarca, located at 3,750 meters above sea level. This archaeological site offers an interesting view of the region’s ancient history.
Then, the route continues for about 40 more minutes to Paucartambo, a traditional town with narrow streets and colonial houses. Here there is time for breakfast and a 30-minute explanation about the local culture.
The next stage takes you to Abra Acjanaco (4,000 m.a.s.l.), which marks the official entrance to Manu National Park. At this point, visitors register with their passport before beginning the descent through the cloud forest, an area renowned for its lush vegetation and abundant wildlife.
Along the way, stops are made for walks and birdwatching, with chances to see toucans, quetzals, trogons, and with luck, the spectacled bear, an endangered species. Lunch is served upon arrival at San Pedro, prepared by the trip’s cook.
Later, there is a short walk to witness the courtship ritual of the Andean cock-of-the-rock, the national bird of Peru. Capuchin monkeys may also be seen along the route.
At 5:00 p.m., you arrive at Bambu Lodge (550 m.a.s.l.), where rooms are assigned. The lodge offers electricity, internet, mosquito-netted beds, private bathrooms, and showers. The day ends with dinner and a briefing about the next day’s program.
Day 2: Pilcopata – Atalaya – Dorado Lodge
After a nutritious breakfast, the journey continues by land for approximately 45 minutes to the port of Atalaya. Along the way, travelers can admire coca plantations, fruit trees, and colorful orchids, offering a first glimpse of the jungle’s biodiversity.
Upon arrival in Atalaya, rubber boots are provided for greater comfort during the journey. Then, a motorized boat is taken to navigate the Madre de Dios River, a scenic and peaceful experience. During the ride, it is possible to spot birds such as herons, kingfishers, vultures, and the striking king vulture (Sarcoramphus papa), one of the most iconic birds of the region.
The route includes a stop at natural hot springs, ideal for a relaxing bath in the heart of the jungle. Lunch is enjoyed on the riverbank, surrounded by nature. If time allows, a visit is made to the native community of Diamante, where visitors can see traditional houses and learn about some local wild fruits.
Around 5:00 p.m., the group arrives at Dorado Lodge (280 m.a.s.l.), a cozy lodge located in the middle of the tropical forest. The rooms offer private bathrooms, solar-powered electricity, and internet access available from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
This day includes a long but enriching journey, full of natural landscapes, local culture, and wildlife. It ends with a comforting dinner and rest in the heart of the Amazon.
Day 3: Dorado Lodge – Entry into the Reserved Zone of Manu – Casa Matsiguenka
The day begins very early, at 5:00 a.m., heading to the Limonal checkpoint, the entry point to the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park. Breakfast is served on board the boat while traveling through wildlife-rich landscapes. With a bit of luck, it is possible to observe exotic birds such as parrots, macaws, toucans, and skimmers, as well as white and black caimans. Occasionally, travelers have even spotted a jaguar on the riverbank, so it’s best to stay alert and watch the scenery closely.
After registering at the Limonal checkpoint, the journey continues upstream along the Manu River until reaching the area known as Cocha Otorongo, one of the best spots for wildlife sightings, especially jaguars. This part of the journey is perfect for those looking to connect with nature in its purest form.
A walk of approximately one hour takes place around the oxbow lake, with chances to spot howler monkeys, woolly monkeys, birds, snakes, and other typical jungle animals.
Later, the boat ride continues until reaching Casa Matsiguenka, a community-managed lodge deep in the rainforest, arriving around 5:00 p.m. Upon arrival, rooms are assigned and there is time to settle in and relax.
At night, after dinner, an optional night walk is offered, and the next day’s itinerary is coordinated with the guide.
Day 4: Casa Matsiguenka – Makisapayoc – Madre de Dios River
The day begins very early with a visit to Cocha Salvador, located just 30 minutes away. This lagoon is one of the most special places within Manu National Park. The experience includes a walk through primary forest and a quiet catamaran ride on the lagoon, ideal for observing wildlife without disturbing it.
During the ride, it is possible to spot giant otters, rare birds, caimans, and with some luck, up to nine different species of monkeys in their natural habitat. This excursion offers one of the closest encounters with Amazonian wildlife.
After exploring Cocha Salvador, the itinerary continues downstream along the Madre de Dios River, crossing biodiversity-rich landscapes. Along the way, you may see monkeys, caimans, tropical birds, and in some cases, the majestic jaguar can be seen among the riverside vegetation.
The boat trip ends upon arrival at Makisapayoc Lodge, where rooms are assigned for rest and relaxation. In the afternoon, a walk is taken to a capybara clay lick, a place where these large wild rodents often gather in groups.
Upon returning to the lodge, a comforting dinner is served in the middle of the jungle, followed by free time to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. This day is full of opportunities to connect with the Amazon in its most authentic state.
Day 5: Makisapayoc Lodge – Blanquillo Lodge (Macaw Clay Lick – Cocha Camungo)
The day begins very early in the morning with a visit to the observation platform at the Blanquillo clay lick, one of the best places to witness the natural spectacle of macaws. From this platform, you can watch as dozens of macaws and other colorful birds arrive to feed on the clay, creating a vibrant scene full of bright colors and jungle sounds. During this activity, breakfast is served while nature provides an unforgettable show.
Then, the journey continues by boat toward Blanquillo Lodge. Upon arrival at the riverbank, a cargo motorbike awaits to transport the group to the lodge. Once there, private rooms are assigned in a privileged natural setting, and lunch is served.
In the afternoon, a walk leads to Cocha Camungo, an ideal spot for watching otters, turtles, monkeys, dwarf caimans, and enjoying the rich jungle flora. In this area stands the Camungo Tower, a 50-meter-tall structure, considered the highest in Peru. From the top, visitors can observe birds and animals in the treetop canopy, a unique experience for nature lovers.
Upon returning to the lodge, a delicious dinner awaits, prepared by the cook. Afterward, guests are encouraged to rest and relax in the heart of the jungle, though there is also the option of a night walk for those who wish to continue exploring.
Day 6: Blanquillo – Puerto Colorado – Puerto Maldonado
This day marks the end of the jungle adventure. Very early, before breakfast, there is a special moment to watch the sunrise in the Amazon, surrounded by the song of birds and the whisper of the forest. It is the perfect time to connect with nature and reflect on everything experienced during the journey.
At 7:00 a.m., breakfast is served in a peaceful and harmonious setting, accompanied by the natural sounds of the jungle.
Then the return journey begins, with a 3-hour boat ride to Puerto Colorado. Along the way, short stops are made to observe birds, monkeys, and other wildlife in their natural habitat. This final boat ride is also an opportunity to enjoy the landscape one last time.
Upon arrival at Puerto Colorado, the journey continues by vehicle for about 3 hours to Puerto Carlos. From there, another transfer is taken to Puerto Maldonado, where the final transfer to the hotel or directly to the airport is carried out, depending on the arrangement.
There is also the option to return by interprovincial bus, which must be coordinated at the time of booking.
It is important to note that all activities are subject to change depending on weather conditions and the guide’s expertise, who may adjust the itinerary to maximize opportunities for wildlife and plant sightings. The Amazon rainforest is beautiful, but also unpredictable.

He did an amazing job of explaining the places we went to. He was also super chill and made great conversation. Despite accomplishing much in a short span, we never felt rushed. Furthermore sometimes when food is included in a tour, it's usually subpar, but the buffet lunch was fantastic and our group was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Cannot recommend this tour enough, especially if you find it difficult to adapt to altitude at Cusco in the first couple of days. Luis A2025-04-11Verified Reliable and secure agency An amazing experience! We got to know a lot about Peruvian culture, visited many archaeological sites and observed beautiful landscapes. Edu Z2025-01-07Verified I'd come back many more times From the beginning the very good service, always attentive to every detail to enjoy all the places visited ☺️ Lana D2025-01-01Verified Great! Affordable!!!! Highly recommend Pedro from Peru Jungle Trips. I only had a few days in Cusco, so I wanted to see as much as possible in my time frame. Pedro was so helpful in planning out my itinerary, and made sure that I spent New Years Eve seeing Machu Picchu and that I made it in time to Cusco for the countdown. Pedro not only gave me a very affordable rate (and that I know from comparing my quote to other travelers I met), but he was able to find last minute train tickets to and from MP for Dec 31st. He also made sure that at every destination, someone either picked me up or directed me to my next location. And of course, it didn’t go unnoticed that Pedro was constantly checking in on me to see how my activities and trip is going. Pedro genuinely wanted me to have a great holiday trip in Cusco.
