Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to the Amazon + Monkey Island + Canopy + Night Safari
Your Sandoval Lake Tour begins with your arrival in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon. Our team will meet you at the airport, bus terminal, or your hotel and transfer you to our office for a brief registration. Depending on your arrival time, the tour begins around 9:00 am.
Next, we will head to the dock to begin a boat journey of approximately 30 minutes along the Madre de Dios River, enjoying the landscapes and vegetation of Tambopata.
Upon arrival at the lodge, you will be welcomed with a juice made from Amazonian fruits. After a brief explanation of the activities, you can settle into your room and enjoy the jungle surroundings.
Your first jungle adventure will be a visit to the famous Monkey Island. Here, you will have the opportunity to observe different species of monkeys in their natural habitat, many of them curious and playful. With a little luck, you may also see sloths, turtles, and exotic birds. Upon returning to the lodge, you will enjoy a typical Amazonian lunch.
In the afternoon, you will venture into the jungle on a guided walk, where you will discover giant trees, medicinal plants, and the best-kept secrets of the tropical rainforest.

At dawn, when wildlife is most active and the jungle begins to awaken, you will begin the excursion to Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse protected areas in Peru.
At dawn, you will travel by river until reaching the beginning of the trail. From there, you will hike approximately 3 km (1.8 miles) along a path surrounded by lush vegetation, with opportunities to observe monkeys, birds, insects, and other wildlife species of the Tambopata National Reserve.
Upon arriving at Sandoval Lake, you will board a rowboat canoe to explore one of the most spectacular ecosystems in Peru. Here, you will have excellent chances to observe giant river otters in their natural habitat, as well as black caimans, turtles, herons, monkeys, and colorful macaws flying over the lake. Afterwards, you will return to the lodge to enjoy lunch.
In the afternoon, you will continue with a guided walk deeper into the jungle accompanied by your guide. You will discover giant trees more than 600 years old, medicinal plants, and the hidden secrets of the tropical rainforest. Here, you will witness a true natural spectacle: dozens of parrots, parakeets, and macaws gather on the river cliffs to feed on mineral-rich clay. On a good day, it is possible to observe up to 7 different species, creating an explosion of colors and sounds unlike anywhere else in the world.

I was in Cusco and wanted to visit the jungle originally thinking Tambopata, overwhelmed with options. My desire was to visit the Amazon and be deep in the jungle with few people. I walked into the office and met Pedro who talked with me for over half an hour explaining different options. Ultimately, Pedro told me that Manu National Park is the place to be in the jungle with few people. Pedro helped me book a 6 day tour in Manu National Park 2 days later.
It is hard to describe how special Manu national park was. The trees, the wildlife, the river, seeing uncontacted Natives, and hearing all of the jungle sounds.

In the reserve we could find many types of fauna and the guide gave information at all times and knew many species.
