Santurantikuy in Cusco: Feel the Magic of Andean Art, Culture, and Tradition at Christmas

The most important art and crafts fair in Cusco takes place in December; every December 23 and 24, dozens of Cusqueñan families gather in the Plaza de Armas to participate as exhibitors in the Santurantikuy Fair.

The Santurantikuy Fair in Cusco was born during the Spanish colonial era; Indigenous and mestizo artisans gathered in the square to create and sell their religious sculptures and paintings for Cusqueñan Nativity scenes. Today, this fair brings together artisans from Cusco as well as artisans from other provinces, becoming the largest craft fair in the region and one of the most important in the Peruvian highlands, which is why in 2009 it was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation.

What can I find at Santurantikuy in Cusco?

This fair is the greatest example of living tradition and cultural heritage in the region. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Connect with the artisan-producing community. Many exhibitors at this fair are artisan producers who were once disciples of master artisans Mérida, Mendivil, and Olave. Others were self-taught. They became artisans after many years of experience. Learn about their work and promote the dissemination and preservation of traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation.
  • Finding unique handcrafted pieces is one of the most special experiences at Santurantikuy. Many of the crafts were made by hand, which makes it unlikely that you will find another identical one. They are exclusive pieces produced in limited quantities!
  • Experiencing living culture is an essential part of this fair, which holds centuries of shared stories. Through art and crafts, you will be able to appreciate the blend of Andean culture with Spanish influence.
  • Feeling a different Christmas experience does not only involve buying souvenirs from your trip or crafts for your Nativity scene. It is also about immersing yourself in a unique festive, cultural, and spiritual atmosphere.
