Hidden among the mountains and surrounded by imposing canyons lies Waqrapukara, a fortress built before the Inca era. Unlike traditional routes, Waqrapukara is a little-visited fortress where with every step you feel the whisper of the wind, the excitement of walking surrounded by canyons, and the distance from the crowds. If you enjoy short and rewarding hikes, Waqrapukara is your ideal destination.
What is Waqrapukara?
In Acos (Acomayo) there are four archaeological sites that continue to be studied and seem to be connected to each other: Tambopukara, Yactapukara, Ayapukara, and Waqrapukara. The last of these is the only one open to the public. Waqrapukara is an archaeological complex covering approximately 4.5 hectares. The meaning of its name is associated with the Quechua language, where huacra means horn and pukara means fortress. From the Waqrapukara viewpoint you can see how this stone fortress takes the shape of horns, imposing itself in the middle of nature.
Today, Waqrapukara is considered a fortress that also served as an important Inca sanctuary, highlighting the great religious and political power they possessed.

Hiking in Acomayo
The hike to Waqrapukara begins in Acomayo, a province known for its large lagoons such as Pomacanchi Lagoon. During the hike you will walk along the impressive Apurímac Canyon and observe different rock formations. In the rainy season the landscapes are green and the sun shines brightly, however there is a possibility of rain so it is recommended to bring a rain jacket. In the dry season the sun is bright and the hike is easier.

Recommendations for visiting Waqrapukara
- Acclimatize before doing this trekking route. Reaching Waqrapukara is not difficult; however, since it is located at more than 4,000 meters above sea level, it is necessary that your body has adapted to the climate of Cusco.
- Bring light snacks. Along the hike you will hardly find local shops or stores, so it is important to bring light snacks and water to recharge your energy.
- Choose the route that best suits you. Doing the longer 3-hour route may sound exciting, but if you recently completed challenging routes such as the Salkantay Trek or the Inca Trail, it is recommended to choose the shorter route that lasts approximately 1 hour.
- Bring appropriate layered clothing. Waqrapukara tours depart early in the morning when the weather is cold; however, by mid-morning the sun is bright, so wearing a jacket all the time can be exhausting. Use layered clothing so you can adapt to any weather, whether rainy or sunny.
- Hire a local travel agency with all the proper certifications. Make sure the travel agency you hire has all the licenses granted by the Peruvian government and avoid risks and scams. At Peru Jungle Trips we are a certified agency, and you can review our licenses and permits on our website.
