What is the most venomous spider in the Peruvian Amazon?
Contrary to what one might believe, the most venomous spider is not one of the largest, but rather a small one colloquially known as the “banana spider or armadeira”; it is also considered one of the most deadly spiders in the world. It is commonly referred to as the banana spider because it is usually found on banana leaves.
Its scientific name is Phoneutria nigriventer, and you will recognize its aggressive defensive posture when the spider raises its front legs, as it only does this when it feels threatened. Its bite is very painful, and females possess more toxic venom than males. The bite of this spider causes increased blood pressure, fever, vomiting, sweating, breathing difficulties, and in extreme cases paralysis; if not treated in time, it can lead to cardiac arrest and even death.
Identifying this spider is not difficult; its size is small, although it can measure up to 4.8 cm in length. It has a reddish color; it possesses large front eyes and smaller ones on each side of the head. Despite its small size, it has thick and hairy legs. If this spider had bitten Peter Parker, the famous Spider-Man, it probably would have been much harder for him to control his powers!
